I work with men and women over 40 years old who are struggling with back, neck and shoulder aches and pains. Usually their job is the main cause of irritation through having to sit for long periods of time at a desk or in a car driving, manual handling jobs and jobs where they have to stand in a stationary position like a production line or serving in a shop. They have tried medication with only limited success and are struggling to know what is best for them to do to relieve the pain.
Over the years I have worked with people from many walks of life with varying jobs and many different reasons for the discomfort but the effects on their lives is the same, stiff joints, poor flexibility, interrupted sleep and lethargy. I help people learn how to get through the day easier and with less aches and stiffness promoting both physical and mental ability so they get out of bed each morning feeling refreshed and ready to face the day no matter what it brings.
We run small groups of classes where each class is tailored to the individuals who attend that session to make sure you are getting the best out of your Pilates practice. Everyone works at their own pace to make sure they are not being pushed harder than their body is ready to cope with. The groups are very friendly and we have a relaxed atmosphere in class where I am happy to answer any questions about what, where and why we are doing a particular exercise. I firmly believe that if you know why you are asked to do something and what it is doing for you then you will apply yourself to the exercise.

My name is Helen Plant and growing up I found the human body amazing and always had a passing interest in how it worked, I loved programmes like “Your life in their hands” when I was a child but didn’t think it was a career path just an interesting hobby. After leaving school I trained as a Hairdresser and Manicurist then had the shock of how little they were paid in the late 80s so went in to a factory to work.
I had always been fit as growing up my parents ran a dance troupe then in to my late teens and twenties I attended gym classes regularly. It was during my late twenties I decided I needed to do something I was passionate about instead of a dead end factory job with no prospects of advancement so took myself off to college for ETM (exercise to music) and started to work as a Fitness instructor. My interests changed the more I studied and I gradually moved away from the cardio type classes and in to teaching more Pilates classes and now I only teach Pilates style classes.
I noticed I was getting more and more people in to class for low back pain and around 5 years ago I specialised in exercise for low back pain, I firmly believe that the better my education the better I can serve you so my bed time reading is often anatomy books which makes my husband laugh.
During my time off we like to go out in hubby’s classic car, pottering around the garden and just enjoying the quiet life with our 2 naughty cats Elwood and Paipai who can be highly entertaining.
